ON THE ROAD TO THE FINALS

PORTLAND, ME - While it's been awhile since a ZOGS update was sent around, the team has been busy enjoying a very successful fourth season in the Portland Ice Arena Hockey League.  Tonight the team plays in the first of two semifinal games against the Red Dogs, whose original team (ME Semi) knocked the ZOGS from the playoffs in their first two years.  However, the team the Red Dogs face tonight will be a mere shell of the one they've faced in previous years.  To recap, lets look at what the ZOGS have accomplished this year, their fourth in the league.

The ZOGS finished this year with a 12-3-5 record (29 pts., a franchise best), good enough for second place and only one point out of first. Scoring continued to be a strong suit once again, as the ZOGS set franchise records in goals (117) and assists (143).  Leading the way for the second year in a row was forward Rob Carrier with 39 goals and 18 assists, which also lead the league.  Overall, the ZOGS had four forwards in the top eight in scoring.  Also setting personal bests this year included Bill Paradis (14-G, 18-A); Andrew Bradford (24-G, 20-A); James Gilbert (20-A); Bill Reynolds (7-A); Rick Magnuson (5-A); and Peter Kelley (3-A).  Defensively, strides were made as well as the team's goals against average dropped by almost 1/3 goals per game, a franchise low.  Rookie defenseman Marc Provencher was a primary reason for that accomplishment as was the more consistent play of netminder Tim Dominick.

As the ZOGS prepare for tonight's Semifinal contest, they have already won the first two playoff series in team history by a combined score of 13-9. If they amass more points over the next two nights than the Red Dogs, the ZOGS will be making their first ever trip to the League Championship Game this Sunday night.  Stay tuned to www.zogs.com for updates as the March to the Finals continues.
